Kirby has struggled with the step to the backyard for a while now. He wants so badly to run outside with the big dogs, but he can't seem to get past his fear and just jump off.
At 2:00am, after watching The Dog Whisperer, I took Kirby out for his potty break before bed. I walked out first and stood there thinking about the show while Kirby assessed the step for the hundredth time.

I usually coax and encourage him, but this time I thought for a moment, then took a deep breath and let all of my tension and anticipation go. I tried to free my mind and be as relaxed as possible. One, two, three seconds later, Kirby hops off the step to join Jane at the water fountain.
Freedom for Kirby and a big revelation for me about what it means to be a calm leader.
